A Church with One Door

“Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” ( cf.  Matthew 16.19b; 18.18).

How much does it cost to get a duplicate key?  Walmart will duplicate my car key for under 10 bucks.   If I need a second house key,  my neighborhood Lowe’s has a Minute Key.

How many keys do have in the Church?

In the Old Testament, Moses had the only key to Israel’s government.     When Moses finished his course,  Moses made a key for Joshua.    After the golden age of Kings David and Solomon, instead of one master key, the nation split, signaling the beginning of the end.

Do we have one master key with thousands of duplicates?  Or do we have only one key?     Obviously, God wants openness and accountability in all relationships,  but if we have a church with a thousand doors how can we trust its message?   The two or three gathered might have a vastly different idea of  yours or my need for spiritual intervention.

Where does authority reside?

Is it in my super-sized local church with smart pastors, quirky fellowship and its set of traditions?

Jesus gave the keys of the Church to Peter.   Instead of writing His own words and works, Jesus entrusted His Church to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.  The  Apostles write Gospels and letters that form our Canon.   The disciples of the apostles continue this Holy Spirit-led leadership.  Ignatius learns from Peter and John. John passes the key to Polycarp.

What keys do your spiritual leaders use?
