The Cloud

“Jesus took Peter, John, and James and went up a mountain to pray.  While he was praying his face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white.  And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah,   who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem.”  (Luke 9)

Part 1:  Peter’s “take” on meeting Moses, and Elijah.   “Master, it is good that we are here;  let us make three tents,  one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

Satan sows his ideas as Peter’s dreams on the Mount of Transfiguration

Dr. Luke pointedly adds,  “But he (Peter) did not know what he was saying.”    Why?  Peter, James, and John were asleep on the front pew while Moses, Elijah, and Jesus were discussing kingdom stuff.   Satan sows his ideas as Peter’s dreams on the Mount of Transfiguration.  It’s the same idea Satan pitched to Jesus in the wilderness, “The kingdom today with no suffering.”  This idea of a “kingdom now” continues all the way up to Jesus’ last day on earth (cf. Acts 1:6).   Even today, TV and radio preachers succumb to KINGDOM without suffering.

Fortunately, on this mountain, the presence of God takes over. Luke writes, “while Peter was still speaking” the cloud of God’s presence overcomes them.   Instead of hearing the voice of Peter they here the voice of God.  “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.” After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone.  They fell silent and did not at that time
tell anyone what they had seen.

Part 2: Peter’s “take” on the Transfiguration in Second Peter.    Peter knows his life is drawing to an end and will soon see the Ancient of Days face to face.    It’s the second coming for Peter.  Christ’s return is no more a myth than his experience on the Mount of Transfiguration.   It is as real as Daniel’s vision (cf. Daniel 7).  It’s time to prepare his flock for what’s coming next.

Peter understands the allurement of false teaching.

Having been a tool of the devil on more than one occasion (cf. Matthew 16:23; Galatians 2:11), Peter understands the allurement of false teaching.  He writes in the next chapter:

“But there arose false prophets also among the people, as among you also there shall be false teachers, who shall secretly bring in destructive heresies, denying even the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.”

Satan’s presence in the halls of the sacred isn’t limited to Job (cf. Job 1:8).  Later,  in the Garden of Gethsemane, the disciple’s sleep and Peter swipes the ear of the soldier and repeatedly denies the Lord.

The spirit of the Antichrist is hovering around the Vatican,  Washington DC, Constantinople, _________name your spiritual hub.

What is the solution?

The Cloud.

Not the internet cloud but the CLOUD OF HIS PRESENCE.
