Jesus Plus Nothing

“Jesus Is the Answer for The World Today Above Him There’s No Other – Jesus Is The Way” Andre Crouch

My 95-year-old mother turned to me and said, “Can’t you hear the loud music?    It’s the hymn, ‘Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus.’” That night was the only time I heard her say something like that.  But like a prophet, she was God’s mouthpiece.  When God speaks, everyone better listen.

The Church’s MOTTO throughout the ages is simple:  Jesus plus Nothing.   While  we differ on the number of channels of grace, all Christians believe “Jesus plus nothing.”

In the Old Testament, Jews were saved by grace (cf. Romans 4:-3; Genesis 15:6; Hab. 2:4) with a detailed set of instructions to practice.  Today’s Exodus reading includes a few of them (e.g. Exodus 11:10-12:14.  “This month shall stand at the head of your calendar, “This is how you are to eat it.)

The rules and regulations of  Passover continue throughout the years as King David testifies in Psalm 116: “I will take the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord. To you will I offer sacrifice of thanksgiving, and I will call upon the name of the LORD.”

Centuries later, the Pharisees spot Jesus’ disciples picking grain.   The Pharisees accuse Jesus of breaking the rules. “See, your disciples are doing what is unlawful to do on the sabbath.”   Jesus compares this action to King David and his companions eating the priest’s grain.  Jesus also makes Himself greater than the Temple and the Sabbath concluding, “If you knew what this meant, I desire mercy, not sacrifice, you would not have condemned these innocent men.  For the Son of Man is Lord of the sabbath.”

All the rules in the Old Testament and New Testament are summed up in one name, Jesus and serve  one purpose, to change us into agents of mercy and to be a people who hear God’s voice (John 10:27).
