‘”Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters, if the world hates you.” I John 3:13
Former NFL quarterback, Tim Tebow, made himself a household name as he bended a knee and prayed. Colin Kaepernick bended the knee as a sign of protest over race. Moral of the two stories? Taking a stand takes courage! And for both Tebow and Kaepernick, it cost them their jobs.
Today’s Gospel, teaches us the importance of rule breaking.
Instead heeding the usher’s advice, “I’m sorry gentleman, we are full,” the sinner’s friends break into the owners house. Talk about risky love. They were the spiritual equivalent of Seal team 6. Instead of allowing the devil to take their friends life, they broke the rules and destroyed some property. Unlike the Seals, the only thing they had going for them was faith and love. The brothers risked everything for their brother in sin.
There are rules and then there are rules. When was the last time you broke a rule that really didn’t matter?
When Jesus sees the faith of the rule breakers, He decides to make some hamburger out of the Pharisee’s sacred cows.
1. He confers forgiveness on the sick man (Only God can do that).
2. He tells them what is on their hearts (Only God can do that).
3. He heals the sick (Only God can do that).
The front row of Pharisees and the teachers of the law leave while the faithful friends shout, “We have seen incredible things today.”
Most of us live our lives so that the “Pharisees and the teachers of the law” don’t give us grief. Breaks some man made rules today and experience the power of God. Fulfill Jesus prophecy about yourself, “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.”
