Ahab and Jezebel went on with life like nothing had happened but the Lord knew. The Lord sends the prophet Elijah to King Ahab after the death of Naboth. He tells Elijah he will find Ahab in Naboth’s vineyard. When the two men met, there was no small talk, no leading up to the point-“After murdering Naboth, do you also just take possession?” Ahab deflects (not admitting guilt) “have you found me out, my enemy?”
Elijah then pronounces God’s sentence on Ahab for the murder of Naboth. “You give yourself to do evil in the sight of the Lord. I will destroy your line-every male child will be destroyed. This is in response to your leading Israel into sin. As for your wife, Jezebel, she will also die and dogs will eat her flesh.”
The summary of Ahab’s life, “No one gave himself to do evil in the sight of the Lord as did Ahab, urged on by his wife Jezebel. He became completely abominable by following idols.” Ahab did repent and God heard his prayers. He stayed Ahab’s punishment to be brought down later on the house of his son.
It is always right to ask for God’s mercy. Admit to the sin and seek his compassion to wipe out the offense. (Psalm 51)
