What Is Your Assignment?

“Your assignment today, should you decide to accept it, is to follow Jesus and ask him questions so that we can use his answers against him.”  If that Mission Impossible assignment was given to you one morning would you pause for a moment to reflect if you really wanted to accept it.  That scenario did happen though to some Pharisees and Herodians.  They were first very subtle in their approach, “Teacher, we know you are a truthful man and you are not concerned with anyone’s opinion.  You do not regard a person’s status but teach the way of God with truth.”  They were trying to say good things about him but there was no recognition that he was the Son of God. Those comments could apply to many people.

Now for the trick question, “Do we pay or not pay the census tax to Caesar?”  Jesus knew it was a trap so he forces them to answer their own question.  “Bring me a coin.  Whose image is on the coin?” They answer Caesar.  “So pay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.”  The crowd is amazed at that answer.

We may think we can outsmart God but it is impossible.  When we encounter the truth we are utterly amazed.
