Jesus said, “as the Father loves me so also I love you, remain in my love.” (John 15:9)
In any relationship there is give and take but when you truly love someone that relationship goes to a higher level. Your commitment level is different. When you love your spouse you would do anything for them. You don’t keep grudges or offenses. You are for them in sickness and in health, in good times and tough times and that all traces back to your level of commitment.
Jesus said again, “if you keep my commandments you remain in my love just as I have kept my Father’s commandments.” He didn’t ask his disciples to do something he hadn’t done.
The main commandment is to love one another as Christ loves us. This love is so deep that you would give your own life for the life of someone else. This is not a master/slave relationship but a true friendship relationship.
Keeping God’s commandments is not burdensome because we love Him and we are his friends. Our commitment to Him is greater because we know He gave his very life for us.
“This I command you: Love one another.” (John 15:17)
