Peter was never one to stand down from a good fight and now he is empowered by the Holy Spirit to defend the gospel. He is ready. When Peter and John heal the crippled man at the Temple, the religious leaders are now on the case and are very upset. They take Peter and John into custody for teaching the people that Jesus was resurrected from the dead. Many people who heard the Word are now believing and they have grown in coverts to 5,000 men. This is taking over the city.
After a night in custody, they take Peter and John to the High Priest and religious leaders. Peter and John probably thought they were going to face the same fate as Jesus, but as the interrogation begins the leaders start with the question “By what power or by what name have your done this?” And Peter being filled with the Holy Spirit answers them. Peters says that if we are being questioned about what was done for the crippled man-you should know because it was in the name of Jesus Christ whom you crucified and God raised from the dead. It is in his name that the man was healed and that we can stand here today. He then delivers a powerful sermon to the religious leaders.
