The human spiritual heart is hard to understand. It wants to follow God and obey his commandments but it also becomes easily distracted away from God and will follow its own ways at any given opportunity.
The scribe that came to Jesus in Mark 12 wanted a heart that followed God. Jesus told him that God is Lord alone. There are no other gods. He said to him, love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength AND love your neighbor as yourself. We can tell others that we love God and we are so spiritual but we never expect a voice from heaven to speak and say “O no you don’t , you are not even close.” But our visible love for God comes from when we love our neighbor. That is how others see how much we really love God. We don’t have to say anything. We don’t have to carry a sign or carry a Bible. They will recognize compassion and they will see God displayed through us.
What does the world see when they see a Christian? Most times they don’t see Christ, or if they do it is a distorted image. But when they see a heart that loves God and it shows in how they love their neighbor, they notice. They may make fun or sneer about what they see, but they do recognize Christ and they see the face of God.
