It is never good when someone says, “Come, let us contrive a plot against someone.” The people of Judah set out to destroy the prophet Jeremiah. They wanted to destroy him by his very own words. That is the most sinister form of threat-to go after what someone says because you can twist words, change or delete sentences, take it out of context and you can effectively destroy a person just with words.
This is a trick as old as time. Satan tempted Eve with the words “Has God said?” causing her to doubt and sin. The scribes and Pharisees constantly tried to trick Jesus with his words and eventually they were successful because they were able to condemn him to death.
The tongue is a very powerful weapon. It can build up or tear down. We are all responsible for our own tongues and what we say.
May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord.
