Maybe God will Relent

Jonah and the whale and the city of Nineveh are stories that are known by most people from Sunday School lessons or from people mocking saying that there is no way that could have taken place. God chose to let us know this story and all of the parts of it. The most interesting part of the story is after the “whale” happens. Jonah agrees that this time he will go to Nineveh. Jonah preaches one sermon, “Forty days more and then Nineveh will be destroyed.” The Bible tells us that the city was so large it took three days to go through it.

Jonah started on his three day journey proclaiming the message and the people believed God. They fasted. They repented and turned to God. The message even went to the king who also repented. The king made a decree and part of it said, “Who knows, God may relent and forgive us.”

The old city of Nineveh is the current city of Mosel, Iraq. The atrocities that Isis has caused on that city rival the wickedness of Nineveh, but there has been a remnant of Christian believers, many who have become current day martyrs for the gospel who long to see God touch that place again.

Maybe God will relent and forgive. Maybe He will send another Jonah. Or maybe it is up to us to pray and turn from our wickedness so that we can pray and see God work in the dark places all over the world.

A heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not despise. Psalm 51
