Are You A Candidate For A Spiritual Heart Attack?
In Mark 7, Jesus said it is not what you put in your mouth that defiles you, but what comes out of your mouth. There were dietary laws that God had set forth for the children of Israel to obey. It kept them healthy but also obedient to God. The religious leaders were trying to say that not obeying the dietary laws made one unclean because what goes in must come out in the physical sense.
Jesus explained it as if you eat something unclean it will eventually leave your body, but all of the “unclean stuff” in man’s heart comes out too-evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance and folly. These things live in our heart and they are often acted up by our words. These will also defile a person.
We are quick to judge someone for the way they eat or what they eat, but when we open our mouth if all of the evil thoughts and ugliness that made our heart “fat” comes out, who should be judged? Heart doctors will tell you heredity and lifestyle affect the heart and its problems, but what if the next time you had your heart checked and the doctor told you that you need to get rid of your evil thoughts, your greed, your deceit, your envy, your arrogance or you will be a candidate for a heart attack. Would you change your lifestyle? Maybe we need to have a spiritual heart check-up today and pay attention to what the doctor tells us. No one wants to have a heart attack.
