Two Miracle Conceptions

If you are barren and want a baby and an angel appears to you and says you will have a son-it is a miracle. There are two other births mentioned in Scripture that are similar. One is from the Old Testament and one from the New Testament.

SAMSON
*mother was barren
*an angel comes to the mother
*prenatal instructions: no wine or strong drink and eat nothing unclean
*consecrated to God from the womb
*he will bring deliverance to Israel from the Philistines
*the boy grew up and the Lord blessed him and the Spirit of the Lord stirred him

JOHN THE BAPTIST
*mother was barren and old
*an angel appears to the father
*both parents were righteous, observing all of the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blamelessly
*he will not drink wine or strong drink
*he will be filled with the Holy Spirit from his mother’s womb
*he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord
*he will go with the Spirt and power of Elijah
*he will prepare the hearts of the people for the Lord

Two special boys who were born during difficult periods of history. God had a plan for each one. Samson has physical strength and power but he also has an enormous downfall. At the end of his life he does deliver the people but at the cost of his own life. John lives out in the desert preaching about the coming Messiah. He baptizes and many turn back to God. The most powerful man, the king was interested in what John said but a party gone awry caused John to be beheaded. God’s plan seems off to us but when we come back to this season of Advent and remember God sent his son, Jesus and he will be accused and die for the sins of all mankind, but thank God for the resurrection. The season of Advent is really about hop
