Since the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the founding of the church, it has grown. What started as 12, then 120, then 5,000, and to millions today shows that it continues to grow every day. We are all individuals but yet we are part of the one Body of Christ, the Church.
Paul describes what the church looks like: prophecy, ministry, teaching, exhortation, generosity/giving, helpers and acts of mercy. As everyone works together to make the church one, they will have love that is sincere, hate what is evil, hold on to the good, love one another, and show honor to one another. People will not grow slack in zeal, but will be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord, rejoice in hope, endure affliction, persevere in prayer, contribute to the needs of others and exercise hospitality.
Finally, if everyone is working together for the good of the church as a whole and for all of the individuals who attend, we will bless those who persecute us and we will not curse them back. We will rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep. We will never become haughty with the goodness the God has blessed us with but always remember to help the lowly.
I am afraid that most of us do no measure up as members in good standing with our local church. Lord, forgive us for our failure to make your church great and help us to find our place to serve and do it as unto You with humility.
