Families and money are probably the two most divisive things that can tear people apart. It was going on during Jesus’ time and it continues today. Someone asked Jesus to tell his brother to divide the family inheritance correctly and that he should be given his fair portion. Jesus would not make a judgment instead he warned everyone against greed. Greed does not make you rich and what money we have is not who we really are.
Jesus told the parable of the rich man who was so rich he didn’t know what to do with all of his money except to build more, make more and get more. God said he was a fool and that night he died. He did not take any of that wealth with him. He left all of it behind.
We must be very careful with our wealth. Wealth wants to control you. If you never expect to receive any earthly inheritance you will not be disappointed. If one day you get a letter from an attorney saying you have been left an inheritance you can be happy that they thought of you not that you every expected to receive anything. God is more concerned about what goes on in our hearts. Is it physical wealth or spiritual wealth that controls our lives? If God is in control we are the wealthiest people in the whole world because we are very rich.
