“For today is holy to our LORD.Do not be saddened this day,
for rejoicing in the LORD must be your strength!” (Nehemiah 8)
“The new wine that Jesus speaks of is the Gospel itself, the Good News that God has joined our human condition. In order to take in such a message and to conform our lives to it, we must expand. If we remain in the narrow confines of the old self, we won’t be able to handle the richness and fullness of the Gospel message. So change! Conform yourself to the love that Christ is. Become like new wineskins.” Bishop Robert Barron
How do you share the good news? Jesus offers us some divine advice, “Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way.” In other words, Don’t act like a used car salesman! That is the idea of taking vows of poverty and chastity.
God sets the messenger free from possessions, family and personal fame. God’s messenger brings the values of the kingdom of God to John Q’s home. If God’s messenger and John Q connect, God just found an outpost.
Sharing the Gospel equals being authentic and accepting God’s appointed messengers. Most of us don’t have the seal of the apostle on our foreheads. However, all of us can obey God’s word as it comes from His anointed.
When God’s people hear God’s word we usually get it wrong. Ezra reads from the Old Testament and the people of God begin to weep. Wrong action.
God’s spokesman instructs:
“Today is holy to the LORD your God.
Do not be sad, and do not weep”–
for all the people were weeping as they heard the words of the law.
He said further: “Go, eat rich foods and drink sweet drinks,
and allot portions to those who had nothing prepared;
for today is holy to our LORD.”
We don’t define holiness. God chooses the days, the times of the season where He allows us to participate in Heaven’s time.
